Meet the Elite Combative Systems Staff

Brian Backus- Co-Owner/Coach

 

Brian is currently a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Brown Belt who is coached by Professor Kevin Wilson of Ryoma Academy Of Martial Arts located in Frostburg, Maryland.  He is also coached by Noah Devore, Matt Shaffer, and Derrick McWilliams from the Academy Underground in Morgantown, West Virginia.

 

Brian proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 2002–2007 and was a Marine Corps Martial Arts Program Instructor, honorably discharged July of 2007.

 

He has trained in No-Gi BJJ, submission grappling and Muay Thai since 2003. Brian has also trained Mixed Martial Arts for the last 8 years, working with professional and amateur fighters.  He currently coaches Gi, No-Gi, striking and MMA while staying active in the competitive submission grappling circuit. His personal coaching goal is to help fighters not only grow as stronger fighters mentally and physically, but also as good, kind hearted individuals.

                                                                            

                                                                              

                                                                                                                                                              

Paul Tost- Co-Owner/Coach


Paul is currently a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Brown Belt who is coached by Professor Kevin Wilson of Ryoma Academy Of Martial Arts located in Frostburg, Maryland.  He is also coached by Noah Devore, Matt Shaffer, and Derrick McWilliams from the Academy Underground in Morgantown, West Virginia.  Paul has been training BJJ since November of 2010.  He also holds a Green Belt in Marine Corps Martial Arts while proudly serving between June 2004–2008, and honorably discharging in June of 2012.

 
Paul currently works for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections where he spent four and a half years as a Tactical Operator and Advanced Operator.  He served as a Chemical Munitions Specialist for the Correctional Emergency Response Team as well as the Department of Corrections, leaving the team only to pursue his dream to coach and train BJJ.

 

Paul is still currently a Defensive Tactics Instructor for the department.  Holding a degree in Homeland Security and trained in the use of force and the survival stress reaction, Paul trains in combative sports to maintain his defensive skill sets in stress induced situations where force is needed. He has been coaching BJJ since March 2013, and as a coach continues to train and compete.
